Kyrgios loses match and his temper

Four Australians are through to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in more than a decade and all four want to push deeper into their home grand slam.

A generational handover took place on Thursday night, when two young talents booked their place in the last 32 and veteran champion Lleyton Hewitt left the building.

Bernard Tomic and John Millman, who will face off for a spot in the fourth round on Saturday, joined Nick Kyrgios and Daria Gavrilova in the last 32 of their events on Thursday night.

Tomic disposed of Simone Bolelli in four sets and Millman edged out wily Luxembourg left-hander Gilles Muller in five.

World No.18 Tomic said it was a good feeling knowing he could look at the draw and see other Australians hanging in there.

"We're all pushing each other," he said.

"It's an Australian thing. We push each other to succeed.

"It's amazing what's happened in the past four or five years, it's good to see.

On Friday, Kyrgios' battle with Tomas Berdych headlines a packed Rod Laver Arena schedule.

Kyrgios has never played big-serving Czech Berdych in a competitive match but the 20-year-old said he knew of his abilities.

"He's one of the best players in the world," he said.

"He's going to be wanting to win as much as I'm going to be wanting to win so it's going to be tough."

After disposing with sixth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova on Wednesday night, Gavrilova moves to Hisense Arena to battle world No.30 Kristina Mladenovic.

Gavrilova knows Mladenovic well after playing against the Frenchwoman in the junior ranks but the pair have never met at a the tour-level.

Tomic said it "kinda sucked" to be playing a fellow Australian but he was delighted to have avoided a meeting with nemesis Muller - a player he has never beaten.

"I think I'm down three-love or four-love to Muller," he said.

"I was excited in my way John won, excited to not face Gilles.

"I hate playing the guy."
