Bernard Tomic bows out in Mexico

  • Bernard Tomic bows out in Mexico

Bernard Tomic has been knocked out in his first match of the ATP Tour event in Mexico.

Nick Kyrgios took his opportunity to claim an ATP Tour title and climb the rankings during the Olympics, not so for Bernard Tomic who failed to win a match in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Tomic, who entered the tournament as the second seed, lost to world No.72 Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in his first match at the event 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-4.

The world No.20 Australian was on song with his own serve in the opening two sets, but failed to send down an ace in the all-important third as he went crashing out of the tournament.

Tomic opted to play in the Mexican tournament over representing Australia in the Olympics, a decision he made in May.

Tomic's defeat comes just days after fellow-Australian Kyrgios made the most of a similarly weakened field in Atlanta to claim his second ATP Tour title.

Tomic wasn't the only seed to fall though, fourth seeded American Sam Querrey was beaten 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 by Colombia's Santiago Giraldo.

Spaniards Nicolas Almagro, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers, Croatia's Ivo Karlovic and Frenchman Julien Benneteau all joined Lajovic and Giraldo in the quarter-finals.
